CGCHI on February 12th, 2009 will honor the New York Philharmonic for their use of music as a means for global diplomacy. Most recently, Music Director Lorin Maazel and the New York Philharmonic gave the first-ever performance by an American orchestra in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea). The concert was the centerpiece of a 48-hour visit that included master classes and a rehearsal open to music students. The New York Philharmonic is by far the oldest symphony orchestra in the United States, and one of the oldest in the world. Founded in 1842 by a group of local musicians led by American-born Ureli Corelli Hill, the Orchestra currently plays some 180 concerts a year. On December 18, 2004, the Philharmonic gave its 14,000th concert — a milestone unmatched by any other orchestra in the world. The dinner will be held at The Players Club on Gramercy Park. Tickets may be purchased securely online, by clicking the "Donate Now" button. |
